The respiratory system starts from nasal passages and end in microscopic airsacs called alveoli in the lungs. Respiratory diseases can range from a relatively minor common cold (nasal passages) to narrowing of the air passages (causing asthmatic attack) to a life threatening infection of the lungs with mucus flooding the air sacs (alveoli) and causing respiratory failure.

Symptoms of respiratory diseases specifically related to dysfunction of the respiratory system are chronic cough, itchy throat, chronic nasal congestion and discharge, chest discomfort and pain, breathlessness and blood stained sputum. Respiratory diseases can also cause non-specific symptoms like fever, loss of appetite and loss of weight, generalised lethargy and even daytime sleepiness.

We are the largest grouping of respiratory specialists practising in the private sector in Singapore and in this region, and we offer a comprehensive range of specialist respiratory medical care for our patients. Our extensive experience comes from having trained and worked in leading hospitals in the USA, the UK, and Australia as well as in the leading training hospitals in Singapore.

We provide specialist medical care in the diagnosis and treatment for a full range of respiratory diseases.

Common diagnostic procedures include lung function testing (spirometry and diffusion studies, histamine challenge test, exercise induced asthma testing), pleural aspiration (chest tap) and pleural biopsy, bronchoscopy and biopsy and sleep studies (to diagnose obstructive sleep apnoea). Other complementary tests are often done in the diagnostic workup and these may include chest x-rays, CT scan of the thorax and PET (positron emission tomography) scans.

Specialised treatment procedures include chest tap and chest tube insertion (to drain excessive fluid from the lungs), pleurodesis (injection of chemicals into the pleural space to prevent re-accumulation of fluid), and insertion of various types of bronchial stents (to open up contricted airways or close up persistent air-leaks).

We provide patient education on asthma and chronic obstructive airway diseases, assessment and drug therapy for smoking cessation. We help in planning home care for housebound patients and providing the necessary equipment such as oximeters and oxygen concentrators.

Our responsibilities toward our patients include referring them to the appropriate specialists for further treatment if necessary. We work in close consultations with other specialists such as cardiothoracic surgeons, ENT surgeons and oncologists. Patients who may require surgery, for example, those with resectable cancers of the lung will be referred to the thoracic surgeon after preparation for surgery. Likewise, for patients with advanced lung cancers, we work closely with oncologists in tailoring the best chemotherapy regime for these patients.
